The Fairwork Nigeria Report 2023: What is the Future of Platform Workers in Nigeria?

The Fairwork Nigeria Report seeks to examine the working conditions of the platform work industry. The platforms examined consist of 12 e-hailing and delivery platforms. These are Uber,  Bolt, Lagos Ride (LagRide), Chowdeck, InDriver, Rida, Glovo, Bolt Food, Jumia Food, Gokada, Mano and Kwik. These platforms were rated using the five Fairwork Principles; Fair Compensation, Fair Conditions, Fair Contracts, fair management and fair representation.

Few months ago, precisely on the 31st March, 2023, the first comprehensive report was released evaluating Bolt, Bolt Food, Glovo, Gokada, Jumia, Kwik, Lagos Ride (LagRide) and Uber using these same principles. Only one out of the platforms was able to provide required evidence to get a score of 4 out of 10.

The goal of the report is to create awareness about the precarious status of the individuals who work long hours to ensure things keep moving with minimum wage. If there is anytime that this should be looked at more closely is not that the fuel prices have been hiked causing over 200% increase in cost of everything

The second comprehensive report is set to be released soon and we hope to see the changes some of these platforms have made.
